No matter how many times you listen to it, Despise // Despair demands your full attention and total immersion. It isn’t content to be mere background noise; it commands your attention. From the very first notes, the piano’s unstable textures are saturated as they pass through a tape echo, and these new signals disorient the listener. Accompanied by layers of electrical friction from a white noise generator, the tape recorder’s preamp saturates the space and draws the listener’s perception inward, pulling them into a spiral of tension and unease. The sound seems to open up a space where pressure, fragility, and rupture coexist. While one might expect comfort or catharsis, Despise // Despair instead lingers in a space where tension persists long after the last vibration has faded.
